How Much Does a Complete Tire Changeover Service Typically Cost?
Know what you are paying for before winter arrives. Compare wheel swaps with full mounting and balancing, plan your annual budget, and choose tires for the roads you actually drive.
At LAB Tire Services, a seasonal on-rim swap costs $90 for a car or SUV and $110 for a truck. A complete off-rim changeover—mounting, balancing and installation of four tires—costs $120–$200 for standard 12–24-inch sizes, before tax. New tires and specialty work are separate.
These are LAB’s advertised local rates, not a Canada-wide average. The biggest pricing question is simple: are your winter tires already installed on their own wheels, or do they need to be mounted on the wheels currently on your vehicle?
Seasonal Tire Changeover Cost in Edmonton
“Tire change,” “tire swap” and “changeover” are often used interchangeably. They can describe different jobs. Ask for the service type and the price for all four tires, rather than comparing headline prices alone.
On-rim seasonal swap
Your winter and summer sets each have their own wheels. The assembled wheels are exchanged on the vehicle. Routine balancing is separate.
Off-rim mounting and balancing
You reuse one set of wheels. One tire set is removed from those wheels, the other is mounted and balanced, and the assemblies are installed.
| Service / wheel diameter | Four-tire price |
|---|---|
| On-rim: car / SUV | $90 |
| On-rim: truck | $110 |
| Mount & balance: 12–15 inches | $120 |
| Mount & balance: 16–18 inches | $140 |
| Mount & balance: 19–20 inches | $160 |
| Mount & balance: 21–22 inches | $180 |
| Mount & balance: 23–24 inches | $200 |

A complete labour changeover is different from buying a new winter-tire package. If you need new tires, request an itemized quote separating tires, wheels, sensors, installation and tax. A price for seasonal labour should not be read as the price of four new tires.
What Do Two Seasonal Changeovers Cost Per Year?
To make the prices useful for planning, we calculated one fall changeover plus one spring changeover. The table compares a car/SUV’s on-rim labour with off-rim labour at the same published rates.
| Car / SUV setup | Annual labour | Difference vs. on-rim |
|---|---|---|
| Two mounted wheel sets | $180 | Baseline |
| One wheel set, 12–15 inches | $240 | $60 more |
| One wheel set, 16–18 inches | $280 | $100 more |
| One wheel set, 19–20 inches | $320 | $140 more |
| One wheel set, 21–22 inches | $360 | $180 more |
| One wheel set, 23–24 inches | $400 | $220 more |
Method: annual labour = advertised appointment price × 2. Difference = off-rim annual labour − $180. These are calculations, not a survey of Edmonton drivers or measured customer savings. Tax, new tires, wheels, sensors, storage, travel, specialty charges and future rebalancing are excluded; prices are assumed unchanged.
A truck’s two standard on-rim swaps total $220 before tax. Truck mounting requires its own quote and is not represented by the car/SUV comparison.
Is a Second Set of Winter Wheels Worth It?
A second compatible wheel set reduces the mounting work needed each season. Whether it pays for itself depends on the actual purchase price, how long you keep your car, and whether that wheel set needs compatible TPMS sensors.
Simple payback in years = quoted wheel-and-sensor cost ÷ annual changeover labour difference. For a 16–18-inch car/SUV setup, use $100 as the annual difference in the table above. This is a labour-only estimate, not a guarantee of total savings.
Before buying wheels, confirm diameter, width, bolt pattern, offset, brake clearance and load capacity for your exact vehicle. A wheel that fits the bolt pattern can still be unsuitable. Include occasional balancing and storage in your decision, and ask whether existing sensors can be reused or a second compatible set is required.
What Can Change the Final Tire Changeover Price?
Wheel diameter is only part of the quote. LAB lists truck and run-flat mounting surcharges of $5 per tire; four applicable tires add $20. Oversized or modified wheels need confirmation. TPMS reprogramming is listed separately at $40, with sensors excluded. Prices assume one service address; travel to another address is extra.
Ask whether any applicable surcharges combine on your specific setup. Also disclose damaged wheels, missing wheel-lock keys, seized hardware or a pressure warning before booking so the technician can assess the work required.
Vehicle year, make and model; tire size from the sidewall; whether both sets are on wheels; truck or run-flat status; TPMS concerns; service address; and whether you want new tires supplied. A photo of the sidewall and wheel set can help clarify the request.
For example, an SUV with ordinary 17-inch tires already mounted on separate wheels needs an on-rim quote. The same SUV with loose winter tires and only one wheel set needs a mounting-and-balancing quote. That distinction matters more than calling both jobs a “seasonal swap.”
What Are the Top-Rated Seasonal Tires for Canadian Winters?
For sustained winter driving, start with dedicated winter tires suitable for your vehicle. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol and compare ice, snow and wet-road performance. A severe-snow marking is not a promise that every marked tire performs equally on ice.
One useful independent reference is Tyre Reviews’ 2025/26 studless winter test. It tested 205/55 R16 tires on a Volkswagen Golf. Its results support this shortlist; they are not a Canadian field test or a guarantee for every size.
| Model tested | Useful finding from that test |
|---|---|
| Continental VikingContact 8 | First overall in the tested group. |
| Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 3 | Second overall; best measured snow braking. |
| Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 | Third overall; best measured wet and dry braking. |
| Michelin X-Ice Snow | Fourth overall; strongest measured ice braking and traction. |
The newer Michelin X-Ice Snow+ is a separate model. Do not transfer the predecessor’s test result to it. Ask for the exact model, size, load rating and current availability.
For west Edmonton errands, Spruce Grove commuting or Stony Plain trips, explain how much of your driving involves cleared pavement, exposed highways, packed snow or recurring ice. Then compare the available tires against that mix. A high overall score is useful, but the performance category most relevant to your driving may matter more.
All-weather tires can be an option for some drivers, but a year-round convenience choice should be evaluated against your actual winter use. Ask about dedicated winters if you regularly drive in severe cold, snow or ice. LAB can check options from its suppliers; availability and pricing need confirmation for your exact fitment.
When Should You Swap to Winter Tires Around Edmonton?
Use temperatures and driving conditions rather than a fixed calendar date. Transport Canada explains that summer and all-season compounds lose flexibility below 7°C and recommends four winter tires. Arrange the change when temperatures consistently approach that range, before you need to drive through winter conditions.
Fall weather can shift quickly. Planning an appointment ahead of the first snowfall helps you arrange a safe work area and confirm that the tires you already own are still suitable. In spring, review sustained warmer conditions rather than switching after one warm afternoon.
Check the tires coming out of storage
Look for visible damage, unusual wear and signs of deterioration; have a technician assess anything questionable. Transport Canada cautions against tires worn near 4 mm of tread for snow-covered roads. That is winter-performance guidance, not a statement of Alberta’s legal minimum. Correct pressure, matching fitment and condition remain important.
Prepare for your mobile appointment
- Provide a safe, level, accessible work area with room for the service trailer.
- Have all four seasonal tires ready and locate your locking-wheel key.
- Confirm permission to work in a workplace or shared parking area.
- Tell LAB about access restrictions and unusual tire or wheel requirements.
After installation, arrange the wheel retorque recommended by LAB after the first 100 km. Review the service and retorque policy . Unsafe weather or an unsuitable work area can require rescheduling.

Seasonal Tire Changeover FAQs
How much does a complete tire changeover cost at LAB?
Standard off-rim mounting, balancing and installation of four tires costs $120–$200 for 12–24-inch sizes before tax. An on-rim seasonal swap costs $90 for cars/SUVs or $110 for trucks. Specialty work and new tires are separate.
Does an on-rim tire swap include balancing?
Routine balancing is separate from an on-rim swap. Balancing is included in LAB’s selected mount-and-balance service. Confirm which service your wheel setup requires.
Can you change my seasonal tires at home or work?
LAB provides mobile service in Edmonton and surrounding communities, including Stony Plain and Spruce Grove. Confirm your exact address, availability, and a safe, level work area with space for the trailer. Workplace or shared parking may require permission.
When should I switch to winter tires?
Plan around consistently colder temperatures near 7°C and expected winter driving conditions, rather than a fixed date or the first snowfall. Use four suitable winter tires and check their condition before installation.
Do I need to buy a second set of wheels?
No. Loose seasonal tires can be mounted on your existing wheels. A second compatible wheel set reduces seasonal mounting labour, but compare its purchase and sensor costs against your actual annual labour difference.
Can LAB supply new winter tires?
Yes. Ask LAB to confirm suitable models, sizes, current supplier availability and an itemized installed quote for your vehicle.
When should my wheels be retorqued?
LAB recommends a wheel retorque after the first 100 km following installation or rotation. Arrange this follow-up and review the service policy.
