Can Every Punctured Tire Be Repaired?
No. Repairability depends on the location and size of the damage, the tire's overall condition and whether it was driven while flat or severely underinflated.
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association's tire-repair guidance limits repairs to the tread area and states that puncture injuries should not exceed 6 mm (¼ inch). It also calls for removing the tire from the wheel so the interior can be inspected.
Transport Canada advises drivers not to operate a seriously underinflated tire because doing so can be unsafe and can damage the tire. Even when the puncture looks small from the outside, an inspection may reveal damage that changes the recommendation.
A repair may be possible when:
- The injury is in the main tread area
- The puncture is small enough for an approved repair
- The tire was not driven while severely underinflated
- There is adequate tread and no structural damage
- The tire passes an internal inspection
